This
is a very famous place in shivaji park area, which is the favourite haunt of many
youngsters, sport lovers and also elderly people.
The
Katta(parapet) in front of SPG(as it is called) in the evening has no place at
all and is crowded by youngsters for whom this is a meeting point.
The
history of SPG goes back to 1909 when a tiny Maharashtra Cricket Club came into
being. This club was alloted a small plot of land in shivaji Park. Later it came
to be called as Dadar Hindu Gymkhana and then to emphasize its cosmopolitan character
it was renamed as Shivaji Park Gymkhana.
It
has presently around 2500 members. Activities undertaken
include cricket, Tennis ,Billiards,Table Tennis ,Carrom,
Karate, Gymnasium, Card Room. But cricket is one of the main attractions
and this institution has given our country of test players who have made their
mark in the international scence.First it was Vijay Manjrekar,
closely followed by subhash Gupte, Chandu Patankar, Manohar Hardikar, Baloo Gupte,
Ramakant Desai, Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Sanjay Manjrekar,Pravin

Apart from cricket, the combination
of Madhu Patil and Manohar Bopardikar, Gajanan Shirke and

Cup Badminton title.
Shyam Shroff, the snooker international, is a product
of this institution.
The Ladies Table Tennis Squad,Jaya Walwalkar and
Suhasini Dharap are also acredited to this institution.
The Gymkhana has been
providing excellent facilities to Tennis players year after year. It is due to
these facilities as well as the conduct of all India and/or State Ranking Tournaments
for a continous period of 12 years that the gymkhana has been given a permanent
seat on the managing council of the MSLTA.
