This
institute was set up in1954 and is a Registered Society financed and administered
by Government of India,Ministry of Tourism and has a Board of Governors consisting
of eminent persons from the Government, Industry, Academics and Management fields.
Today tourism is recognised as
the largest economic activity in the world. Hospitality is a key segment of the
travel and tourism industry. This means a need to have professionally trained
manpower to operate hospitality enterprise. This Institute is a pioneering body
in the country to meet this felt need.
Shri S. L. Dhargalkar, Principal, Institute
of Hotel Management, Mumbai, received the National Tourism Award for Excellence
'96-97 from the Vice-President of India, Shri Krishnakant.
In
addition to extensive theoritical and practical training in the hospitality operational
areas, management subjects such as principles of Management, Sales and marketing,
Human Resources Management, Finance as well as related technical subjects such
as Food Science, Hygiene and Nutrition form part of the syllabus of the management
course.
House Keeping Laboratory
The
Institute enjoys the largest facilities of it's kind in the country , is well
equipped and has fully furnished laboratories and classrooms.There are 8 Kitchen
laboratories, 4 Bakery laboratories, 1 Food science laboratory, 1 Front Office
laboratory, 1 Housekeeping & Laundary laboratory, 1 Canning & Food Preservation
laboratory, 2 Training restaurants, 1 Auditorium, 2 Computer laboratories, Training
Guest-rooms and 12 classrooms.

The Institute Library is
the largest technical library in the country in the field of hospitality profession
and is well equipped with journals , magazines, books, films, slides etc.
Bakery Laboratory
There
are 29 full time qualified and experienced faculty. Many eminent persons from
the hospitality industry and management field are on the list of visiting faculty.
